Chief Financial Officer, Government Employees Health Association - Kansas City, MO


The Government Employees Health Association (GEHA) has retained Witt/Kieffer to aid in the recruitment of its Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This letter is an inquiry for nominations for this important role.

GEHA, named one of the Best Large Companies to work for in 2017 by Kansas Cityís Business Magazine, Ingramís, seeks a CFO to provide direction for organizational strategic issues as well as overseeing day-to-day financial operational responsibilities. GEHA is the second largest national health and dental plan serving civilian federal employees, retirees and their families. Covering 1.8 million lives worldwide, GEHA is financially strong with assets of $2.2 billion and premium income of $3.6 billion. GEHA returns approximately 91 cents of every premium dollar to its members.

Based at GEHAís corporate headquarters in Leeís Summit/Kansas City, Missouri, the CFO is a trusted advisor to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Executive Management Team and plays a key role in developing and executing the strategic vision of the organization, specifically advising on the financial impact. Reporting to the GEHA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the CFO is the chief steward of the financial health of the organization providing overall leadership and direction of finance, budget and accounting functions as well as facilities management.

The CFO directs the financial activities in a manner that anticipates and supports the current and future organization objectives and complies with the highest and ethical and applicable professional, technical and regulatory standards. The CFO establishes financial policies and procedures as appropriate, provides financial strategic management, and manages GEHAís financial assets for the optimum benefit of the Associationís members. The CFO works closely with the Audit Committee.

Candidates should have an educational background in accounting, finance or business administration. An advanced degree is preferred. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is preferred but exceptional candidates who do not possess a CPA will be given consideration. Candidates will have substantial financial and management leadership experience preferably achieved in a health care setting and ideally with experience with health plans or insurance related issues.
