Chief Information Officer (CIO), Anne Arundel Health System - Annapolis, Maryland

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Anne Arundel Health System (AAHS) in Annapolis, Maryland is an exciting opportunity for a charismatic, energetic, progressive, innovative senior IT executive to make a significant impact by leading an existing technology department within a forward thinking, progressive and growing organization. The CIO will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of information systems across AAHS and will report to the Executive Vice President, Integrated Care Delivery and Chief Operating Officer. The CIO will be a member of the Executive Council, Operations Council and Quality Council.

The opportunity for a new leader to guide the future direction of information systems at AAHS comes after the recently announced retirement of its current CIO. This position is not considered a turnaround opportunity, however, specific areas within IT including infrastructure, disaster recovery, governance and team skills will need to be assessed to ensure that information systems is prepared to meet the future needs of the organization and its customers and is poised to provide innovative technology solutions as AAHS expands beyond the walls of its facilities. A focus on consumerism, innovation, and customer service and leadership development is key. As evidence of these key focus areas, the organization is currently undergoing a refresh of their organization wide Vision 2020 strategic plan which requires IT leadership and support. A strong understanding of the changes in healthcare and its impact on the organization and its customers and a demonstrated ability to meet these challenges, including population health and patient/community engagement thru IT advancement will be essential to the success of this new leader.

The position requires a confident, emotionally intelligent, forward leaning, “big picture thinking” technology leader who has significant history and demonstrated experience in innovation and customer service, either within or outside the healthcare industry, and has the ability to collaborate with all stakeholders. Key skill sets necessary to be successful in this role will be a strategic leader who has demonstrated the ability to mentor and hire strong teams, provide a strong sense of purpose and trust, while also holding individuals accountable for the overall success of their efforts.

AAHS has used Epic as their EHR since 2009. Additional technology platforms include Athena Health for ambulatory billing and PeopleSoft for ERP. The organization is continuing to implement Epic applications with a number of major implementations planned over the next 12-24 months. Optimization of PeopleSoft is also active across the organization as the full suite of applications are evaluated and implemented.

Recent focus on analytics has also provided new opportunities to provide key data and information in order to improve service and reduce costs. Therefore, the opportunity for the new CIO will be to enhance those operations and focuses to provide strategic leadership and innovations to meet the future needs of the organization, the providers, the staff and the patients they serve.
