THE DO's Of Resume Preparation
At the top of the page put your name, address and phone number. If you are using a computer, use a large font size and bold your name (Make it look pretty)
The first thing on your resume should be a Career Summary (if you have experience) or an Objective (if you are new to the field). A career summary is a listing of your qualifications and attributes that are pertinent to the field in which you seek a position, while an objective indicates the type of work you are seeking.
Example of a Summary: I have worked fifteen years in nursing positions of increasing responsibility, including critical care nursing, discharge planning, utilization management and quality management.
Example of an Objective: Having attained knowledge of managed care and utilization management through MCR's workshops, I have a strong desire and commitment to obtain a position in Utilization Management.
Employment dates should include the month and the year, and should be typed at the left margin.
On the same line as the date, type the name of your employer and the city. The next line should show your job title. On the next line, describe your functions and responsibilities, emphasizing those skills that would be needed on the job you are applying for. Note that this format leaves your employment dates "hanging" alone in the left margin.
Know the qualifications and experience required in the job you are seeking. If you are not sure, call and ask.
THE DON'T's Of Resume Preparation
Don't try to keep your resume to one page in length with the result that it is so brief it does not reflect your worth . A resume that is too short is as bad as a resume that is too long. The average resume will be no longer than two pages.
Don't make your employment dates hard to find. The employer wants to scan employment dates, employer names, and job titles quickly. If these are hard to find, the employer may feel you are hiding something.
Don't show a frequent turnover in jobs or "gaps" in employment, without explanation.
Don't include a reason for leaving a position unless it will assist the person reading the resume. For example, if you have been caught in frequent job changes because of "downsizing", mergers, etc., a reason for leaving is appropriate.
Don't send the same resume to every job listing you read or hear about. The resume that you send for a clinical position should emphasize different skills than the one you send for a management position, or the one you send for a position in managed care.
Don't write a summary or objective that does not contribute to your resume or is not pertinent to the position you are seeking. An example of a poor objective is: "To find a position that utilizes my nursing skills and management abilities" - this is so general it contributes nothing to the resume.
